1956. Ancien tailleur dans le célèbre quartier de Savile Row à Londres, Leonard Burling a quitté son pays pour s'installer en Amérique. À Chicago, il tient aujourd'hui une petite boutique de costumes, dans un quartier défavorisé. Malheureusement pour lui, la plupart de ses clients sont des gangsters de l’Outfit et de la mafia irlandaise dirigée par Roy Boyle. Le bras droit de Roy est son fils Richie. Ce dernier fréquente par ailleurs Mable, la réceptionniste de Leonard. Le tailleur anglais va se retrouver impliqué dans les activités des mafieux.
